DAVID CHAVIS HOUSE - Brooklyn

This housing project in Brooklyn was built around large trees on its wooded
site. The flowering Japanese plums, oaks, elms and poplars were so
important that we designed the new building around them
.

The 153 unit project for the elderly occupies only 20% of its two acre site with the balance occupied by trees, gardens, walkways and sitting areas. Here the
eight-story structure had to grow to reach the height of the trees.

The federally financed Section 202 project was sponsored by the First
Baptist Church of Crown Heights. The neighborhood consists mainly of
small apartment houses and brownstones. The reddish orange brick and the
fa~ade of David Chavis House was designed to match and complement the
finish and color of the surrounding buildings.

This 9 million dollar building was completed three months ahead of
schedule. Financial assistance was supplied by HUD and it was built by
Ammcon, Inc. and T.E. Keller
